It is with great sadness that I learned of the passing of Jerry Harris. He was to receive the Liam Tuohy Special Merit award from the Soccer Writers of Ireland in recognition of his outstanding service to football in Cork in particular and indeed to League of Ireland football. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Due to the ongoing Covid concerns the Soccer Writers\u2019 Annual Banquet had to be postponed, however the award was voted on by the writers and broadcasters and the beautiful trophy was engraved and on its way to Cork to be presented to Jerry and the Harris family on Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jerry\u2019s contribution to the game since the 1950\u2019s was truly remarkable. Glasheen, Rockmount, Albert Rovers, Cork Alberts and Cork United all saw service, and as a player or a coach he always made a major contribution. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
However it was at Cork City where he fulfilled every role: cutting the grass, washing the gear, picking the team, and paying the bills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He kept the game alive in the city when it looked like it might be let die and he will be regarded as one of the greats of the game in Cork.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He was always one of the nicest, kindest people you could meet, a gentleman of the sport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To his wife Rose, his son Tony, daughter Audrey and brother Mick we extend our deepest sympathies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
